A Balmy Summer Birthday Photoshoot for Sweet Brynhild in Derbyshire
On a warm, early summer’s day, I had the joy of capturing a birthday photoshoot for the sweetest little soul, Brynhild, who is due to turn two soon. Set in the soft, golden light of my dear friend Laurenne’s flower farm in Bolsover, Derbyshire, the session was filled with laughter, play, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with toddlerhood.

Among swaying long grasses and in the shades of the trees, we created a dreamy, joy-filled space just for her. Baskets spilling over with flowers, pastel balloons bobbing in the breeze, and a collection of her favourite types of toys, including baby Dinkum dolls. Everything was chosen to reflect her curious, gentle personality, from the soft textures to the sweet, simple colour palette.
There was no pressure and no posing. Just play. That’s the beauty of the way I approach birthday photoshoots in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and the surrounding areas. They’re relaxed, unhurried and entirely child-led. We let Brynhild explore, smile (and do quite a bit of serious facing too haha!), and celebrate in her own way. She smiled as her big sister blew bubbles, as she made the dinkum dolls give kisses, and as she tucked into a happy little pile of donuts and cupcakes that felt like a celebration all on their own.
These moments, the frosting-smudged cheeks, the chubby toddler hands holding tiny dolls, are what I love to preserve. Birthday photography should reflect the heart of your child, and no two sessions are ever the same. Every setup is thoughtfully styled to match each little one’s world: soft and floral, wild and muddy, full of colour or quietly whimsical.
