Family Photographer Mansfield | Playful Spring Blossom Photoshoot in Retford, Nottinghamshire

Spring in Nottinghamshire brings with it the most magical setting for family photos – soft light, fresh air, and, of course, the incredible apple blossoms. As a family photographer based near Mansfield, there’s nothing I love more than capturing families simply enjoying time together, and this session, set in a peaceful orchard in Retford, was the perfect example of what a play based photoshoot is all about.

This wasn’t about posing stiffly or saying “cheese.” This was about real moments. Real giggles. Real connection.

A Family Session Filled with Laughter and Play

From the very first moment we stepped into the orchard, it was clear the kids were ready for fun. The apple trees were in full bloom, petals fluttering down like confetti, the perfect backdrop for some real, joyful family memories.

This brother and sister duo wasted no time – they were off, running between the trees, weaving through blossom-laden branches, and letting their imaginations take over. I always encourage a relaxed, child-led approach to family photography, especially during spring when nature becomes a playground.

Big brother took his role very seriously – not in posing, but in collecting sticks! He was totally in his element, and watching him explore with such curiosity made for some of the most natural, storytelling images. He very excitedly found a ladybird too!

Meanwhile, little sister was full of mischief, the kind that makes for golden memories. Her laughter was infectious, especially when mum scooped her up and tipped her upside down mid giggle! It’s these little in between moments, not staged, not posed, just them, that truly tell a family’s story.

Why Play Based Family Photography Works

Children don’t need to “perform” for the camera. In fact, I believe the best family photos come when they forget the camera is even there. That’s why I guide families through a session filled with play, whether it’s chasing each other, picking blossoms, balancing on fallen logs, or whispering silly secrets.

This kind of photography isn’t just about what your family looks like, it’s about what your family feels like.

As a family photographer in Mansfield, I know how important it is to create an experience that parents and children will remember fondly. When the experience is fun and relaxed, the photos reflect that energy. They feel alive, authentic, and full of personality.

The Beauty of Spring in Nottinghamshire

There’s something truly special about springtime in Nottinghamshire. The apple orchards become dreamy, blossom filled havens. The pink and white petals, the fresh green grass, and the golden light filtering through the trees all come together to create a backdrop that feels straight out of a storybook.

This season doesn’t last long, just a few short weeks, but during that time, it’s absolute magic. If you’re considering booking a family photoshoot in spring, I highly recommend planning ahead. Blossom season is one of the most popular times for family sessions in Nottinghamshire, and it’s easy to see why.
