The Beauty of Photographing Older People | Capturing Soul, Story and Strength in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Beyond
There’s a quiet magic that happens when I photograph older people. Something unspoken but deeply powerful. Their presence holds a kind of richness that you simply can’t fake. It’s in the way they move, the lines etched gently into their skin, the softness in their gaze, or the way they laugh with their whole chest. Photographing them feels like a gift every single time.
I often think of it like this: you can see their journey written across their body. Their eyes carry decades of stories. Their smile holds generations of love, loss, joy, and resilience. And when they stand in front of my camera, something incredibly special happens, it’s like their soul speaks a thousand words without ever saying a thing.

And yet, so often, older people shy away from the lens.
Why More Older People Should Have Photoshoots
We live in a world that can feel very youth focused, especially when it comes to photography. But the truth is, every stage of life deserves to be seen, celebrated, and remembered. That includes us getting to get older.
I believe wholeheartedly that photography is not just for weddings, babies, and birthdays. It’s for you, right now. Just as you are.
Older people often say to me, “Oh, I’m not photogenic anymore” or “What would I even do in a photoshoot?” And my answer is always the same: you just have to be you. Your presence, your energy, your story, that’s more than enough.
Whether you’re 60, 70, 80 or beyond, your life is worth capturing. Not just for your loved ones to look back on, but for you, too. There’s power in being seen. There’s grace in showing up as your whole self.
What I See Through the Lens
When I photograph older people, whether it’s a solo portrait, a couple who’ve been together for decades, or a grandparent surrounded by family, I don’t just see a face. I see:
Strength from everything they’ve lived through
Wisdom that doesn’t need to be spoken aloud
A sense of self that’s settled and sure
And often, a wonderful sense of humour and mischief
There’s a certain stillness and presence in the way older people show up. No pretense, no performance. Just honesty. And that makes for the most breathtakingly beautiful portraits.

Photography for All Ages | In Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Beyond
Based in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, I’ve worked with people across the East Midlands and beyond who want to document life in its many forms. And one thing I always encourage, especially for older generations, is to not wait for a special occasion to be photographed.
I travel across the countryside, towns, and villages of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and nearby counties, meeting people in their homes, gardens, allotments, favourite walking routes, or even just places that feel like them.
You don’t need a studio or a big setup. Just bring yourself, and I’ll bring the camera.
Photos That Tell a Lifetime of Stories
Some of my favourite sessions have been quiet, unhurried portraits with older clients, where we simply chat, connect, and allow the moments to unfold naturally. We might wander through a garden, share a cup of tea, or take a slow stroll in nature. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced.
The resulting images are often raw, honest and deeply moving.
Because in those quiet moments, something powerful happens: your soul starts to speak through the image. And that’s where the real magic is.
Gifting a Photoshoot to a Parent, Grandparent or Loved One
A thoughtful idea I always recommend is gifting a photoshoot to someone you love. Whether it’s for a birthday, anniversary, or “just because,” it can be such a meaningful experience, for them and for you.
A relaxed portrait session can give older people the space to reflect, feel seen, and simply be celebrated for who they are right now. And for families, these images become absolute treasures.
Ready to Celebrate Your Story?
Whether you’re looking for a natural portrait session in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire or surrounding areas, or want to gift one to someone special, I’d love to help create something truly meaningful.
My photography is always relaxed, personal, and honest. No pressure. No performance. Just you, beautiful as you are, with all your years, your wisdom, your spark.
Because it’s never too late to be photographed. And you deserve to be seen.
Let’s create something you’ll treasure forever.
