What to Wear for a Photoshoot in Nottinghamshire| Be Yourself, Always
Whether you’re planning a couple session in the heart of Sherwood Forest, a soul filled portrait shoot on the hills of the Peak District, or a family walk through a Nottinghamshire woodland, one of the most common questions I get asked is: What should I wear for my photoshoot?
The answer is simpler than you might think, wear what feels like you.
Maternity Photoshoot Nottingham by Marley & The Wildlings Photography
At Marley & The Wildlings Photography, mystyle is relaxed, candid and real. I’m not at all about stiff poses and forced smiles. I’m about you, the real, messy, beautiful, fully alive version of you. And that starts with what you wear.
Dressing for a Photoshoot in Nottinghamshire | It’s All About Feeling Like You
The best photos happen when you feel at ease. Your outfit should reflect who you are, not just what’s trendy or Pinterest perfect.
Want to wear your favourite vintage jumper? Do it. Love floaty dresses and chunky boots? Amazing. Live in your jeans and a comfy tee? That’s more than fine, that’s perfect.
Ask Yourself:
How do I want to feel during this shoot?
Do I want to feel grounded and cosy? Or bold and empowered?
How do I want to see myself when I look back on these photos in 10, 20, 50 years?
There’s no one size fits all here. Some people use their session as a chance to celebrate their most relaxed, everyday self. Others want to step into a more expressive, creative version of who they are, and both are beautiful.
What to Wear for Outdoor Photoshoots in Nottinghamshire
Let’s talk a little about location. Nottinghamshire is full of wild, wonderful places to shoot, whether that’s open fields, woodlands, riversides or moody town backstreets.
Consider the Weather… but Don’t Let It Rule You
It’s always wise to check the weather (especially here in the East Midlands where we love a good surprise downpour). Layering is your friend, think oversized cardigans, long coats, scarves, or boots you can stomp in.
But honestly? Some of our favourite photos have been taken when everything went to ruin. Dresses clinging to legs, shoes caked in mud, hair soaked through, eyes laughing, that’s the magic.
So if it rains, let it rain. If the wind howls, wrap up in each other. The weather becomes part of the story, part of the wild joy of the moment.
Colours, Textures & Comfort: A Few Gentle Tips
We’re not here to give you strict rules. But if you’re after some guidance, here are a few gentle nudges to help you feel your best.
1. Choose Colours That Complement the Landscape
Neutral tones (think creams, olives, rusts, browns) look incredible against the backdrop of Nottinghamshire’s forests, fields and moorland. They help keep the focus on you, not your outfit.
That said, if you feel amazing in a bold red coat or your favourite mustard yellow knit, wear it. Confidence always wins, and bold colours stand out amazingly well.
2. Textures Photograph Beautifully
Linen, wool, denim, corduroy, velvet, knits, these add so much depth and warmth to your photos. They move and catch light in lovely ways.
3. Avoid Logos & Distracting Patterns
We want you to stand out, not your clothing brand. Subtle prints are fine, but anything super busy or high contrast can distract from the moment.
4. Comfort First, Always
Can you move freely? Sit on the ground? Walk through a field? Dance in the wind? If not, it might not be the right outfit for this moment.
Dressing for Soul Sessions & Portraits
For our solo Soul Sessions, those quiet, powerful moments where we get to really see you, the same rules apply. Or rather, the same lack of rules.
Want to wear your cosiest knit and bare feet? Perfect.
Feel like embracing your inner goddess in something floaty and dramatic? We’re all in.
Need to arrive in full black and heavy boots to feel your power? Hell yes.
These sessions are about capturing the real you, not the version the world expects.
Family Photoshoots | Keeping Everyone Comfy
If you’re planning a family photoshoot in Nottinghamshire, the same ethos applies. Kids don’t need to be polished and pristine, they need to be able to move, run, roll, climb, cuddle. Choose clothes that let them do that.
Coordinating is lovely, however, matching is not necessary. Think soft, harmonious colours and cosy textures. Bring a spare layer or two for little ones (and snacks, always snacks).
The Bottom Line? Be Yourself
What you wear should never be a costume. It should be a celebration of who you are in this season of your life.
Photoshoots with me are never about perfection. They’re about real moments, deep connections, wild weather, soft smiles and muddy boots.
So wear what feels good.
Wear what feels true.
And don’t worry about getting a little bit messy along the way.
